The European Commission (the “Commission”) has received notifications from Apple stating that Apple Ads and Apple Maps meet the DMA thresholds and now has 45 working days to assess whether these services should be designated as gatekeepers, after which Apple would have six months to comply with the DMA obligations if the designation is confirmed.
The Commission has issued a Statement of Objections to Universal Music Group (“UMG”) regarding its proposed acquisition of Downtown, noting in its preliminary assessment that UMG may have the ability and incentive to gain access to commercially sensitive data and that such information advantage for UMG would hamper rival labels’ ability and incentive to compete with UMG.
The Italian Competition Authority has expanded its investigation and opened a procedure for the adoption of interim measures against Meta, finding that the company’s new WhatsApp Business terms and the integration of new Meta AI interaction tools or features into WhatsApp could constitute a potential abuse of a dominant position by excluding competing AI chatbots and favoring Meta’s own AI tools.
Parliament and Council negotiators in the European Parliament have reached a deal on new EU payment services rules that improve competition by reducing market barriers for open banking services, including prohibiting data-access obstacles and requiring banks to grant non-discriminatory access to payment accounts, with the agreement now needing formal adoption by Parliament and Council before it can enter into force.
